Experience

Reporter

St. Louis Public Radio

St. Louis, MO

October 2021 - Present

I’m an education reporter at St. Louis Public Radio. I report and produce spot news, features, web articles, photos and I sometimes use daily graphics to put together data visualizations for my pieces and for other reporters. I edit audio using Adobe Audition and record audio in the field with a Tascam.

Producer

The PBS NewsHour

Washington, D.C.

May 2019 - May 2021

I was a producer at the PBS NewsHour, covering both daily breaking news and longer-term, visual features. I was on the politics team, where I pitched, produced and wrote segments and field reports. I also shoot video in the field and edit video using Adobe Premiere. At NewsHour, I covered some of the biggest stories of the year, interviewing lawmakers in the halls of the U.S. Congress during impeachment proceedings and covering the 2020 presidential race. I’ve also worked on longer-term, group projects; I was part of the small editorial team that researched and wrote questions for our December 2019 Democratic Debate in collaboration with Politico.

Sr. Producer

Newsy Docs

Washington, DC

March 2017 - May 2019

I was the senior producer with the Newsy Documentaries team, creating long-term projects from start to finish. I led teams of videographers, editors and correspondents on series and special reports that were part of Newsy's feature work. I pitched ideas, planned and researched shoots and interviews, storyboarded, field produced, wrote scripts and worked with the editor to put the story together. I was the narrative and journalistic backbone for our projects, while also keeping track of all the small details like call times and little moments of vérité to include in the final project. In this role, I won an Edward R. Murrow award for breaking news on our documentary, Walkout, I was a finalist for an Eppy award for our report, Asylum, and I won second place from the Society of Environmental Journalists for the series, Revolt.

Reporter

Newsy

Washington, DC

January 2016 - March 2017

Columbia, MO

January 2015 - January 2016

I reported, hosted and edited digital videos for Newsy's politics team. I covered the 2016 election from the Iowa Caucuses to the inauguration, reporting social video and news doc work from the field, and producing explainer videos from the office. I was one of the first national reporters to cover the Dakota Access Pipeline from the ground, which earned Newsy more than 7 million views on Facebook alone, and I put my Spanish skills to work in Havana while covering President Obama's historic trip to Cuba.

Before moving to DC, I led Newsy's breaking and headline news coverage in the mornings, starting bright and early at 5am. I assigned stories to our morning news team, published to our CMS, wrote social copy, and wrote, hosted and edited videos, all under super quick deadlines. At this time, much of Newsy's content was white-label video for partners including Time Magazine, The Daily Beast and AOL. I worked closely with editors from these outlets to give them quick, accurate digital videos that added to their coverage.

Production Assistant

WBEZ, Chicago Public Media

Chicago, IL

May 2014-December 2014

I was a production assistant for WBEZ's daily global affairs program, Worldview. I worked alongside two producers and the host of the show. Daily duties included pitching and producing live interview segments on issues from every corner of the world, producing and publishing the show's podcast, and running the show's social media accounts. I also got to do all of the fun stuff that comes along with putting on a live show, like answering the phones, researching and writing questions for the host and even sometimes helping to set up live music performances.

While I was in college, I worked part time as a producer and reporter for mid-Missouri's NPR affiliate. I produced a weekly local and state politics show, called Talking Politics. I also reported, wrote and produced spot news and feature stories that aired during Morning Edition and All Things Considered, and I edited and produced web-only content for kbia.org. I mastered field producing, non-linear editing and writing scripts in a public radio style.
